When you plan to approach the net and hit a volley, how far towards the net should you be able to progress prior to hitting your first volley?
A: Behind the service line
B: On the service line
C: Inside the service line
D: None of the above
E: Depends on the approach shot
The answer is ‘E’. It will depend on the quality of the approach. Too many players use the service line as a stopping point and wait there for the first volley. It is like they hit a force field and can’t go any farther. Because of this they are hitting the volley off the top of their shoes or off the short hop way to often. If you can close in farther than the service line, and still maintain balance and control, then do so. Remember that the closer you are to the net, the easier the volley will be. Be aware the possibility of a lob in certain situations, but don’t fear it. Get in there and close the net.
